About Termite & its Type, Life Cycle, Colony in Detail:

TERMITES:

Termites are grouped into three main categories:

  • Subterranean
  • Dampwood
  • Drywood

Subterranean:

Tunnels underground originate from the parent colony and lead to a food source or shelter tubes up vertical objects.

Dampwood:

Existence exists in trees, stumps, and areas where timber is in contact with moist soil. A sustained moisture supply is necessary. It also occurs in wall cavities and beneath houses.

Drywood:

They mostly exist in dry wood where atmospheric moisture is often high, such as in the warmer tropical areas. It also occurs in some dry areas.

Subterranean

Subterranean is now divided into three types.

  1. 1-Mounds:
    1. The central colony is on a raised mound from which subterranean tunnels radiate.
  2. 2-Non-Mound Colonies
    1. in trees, tree stumps, and wood on the ground. Subterranean tunnels radiate from these.
  3. 3-Arboreal Colonies
    1. Nests are at various heights on trees or on top of posts. Ground contact is necessary, and tunnels radiate underground from the base of the tree or post.

The Colony & Its Castles:

Now we are going to discuss termite colonies and their castes.

Reproductive:

They are the sexual forms of the colony – the future kings and queens. When they are fully winged and ready to leave their nest, they go on a colonizing flight. In many species, if the queen dies or degenerates, some of her young are selected to carry on the colony. Additionally, it’s possible for other kings to develop from the growing reproductive.

Worker:

They make up the majority of the colony’s inhabitants. They take care of the colony’s needs by gathering food, caring for it, and feeding the other castes.

Soldier:

Their primary duty is to protect the colony against outsiders, especially ants.

King:

He fertilizes the queen from time to time and, like the queen, is long-lived. The original king, along with the queen, tended to the young during the early life of the colony.

Queen:

The main function of the queen is reproduction. However, during the early developmental period of the colony, she, together with the king, tends her young until the workers are numerous enough to take over these nursery duties.

LIFE CYCLE:

Termites develop gradually. The developmental stages are egg, nymph, and adult. The eggs are laid singly except in Mastotermes darwiniensis, which lays its eggs in long rows. The workers or, in the case of M. Darwiniensis and species of the family Kalotermitidae, which do not have a genuine worker caste, the older nymphs, feed the first instar nymphs when the eggs hatch into them. After molting several times, the young nymphs differentiate into various castes: workers, soldiers, and alates. The developmental period may take 2-4 months to several months. depending on such factors as food availability, temperature, and the vigor of the colony. During the colonizing flight, which typically occurs in the early summer, the fully winged forms (alates) depart the colony to found new colonies.

A piece of timber in the moist ground or a rotting scar at the base of a tree is a favored nesting area for a potential new colony. When a pair of de-alates set up in a suitable environment, they hollow out a small chamber in which they mate, and then the female lays a small number of eggs. At this stage, this future king and queen must feed and care for their young. Later, the task becomes the responsibility of the workers, or in primitive species, the nymphs.

Termite Nest:

Now we will learn about termite nests.

a) Ground mounds

In the Northern Territory, species including Coptotermes lacteus, Nasutitermes exitiosus, Microcerotermes turneri, and Amitermes spp. create enormous earth mounds. The nursery, where the queen is found, is often formed by an inner center region of a softer, papery material that is surrounded by a large network of tunnels and a tough outer shell.

b) Subterranean nest

Major pest species (including Coptotermes acinaciform, C. french, and Schedorhinotermes intermedius) often build their nests underground, although some can do so if there is a reliable supply of moisture or water. C. acinaciform has been seen nesting inside trees and between the floors of enormous metropolitan structures, sometimes even high above the ground. These termites prefer to nest in tree stumps and trees.

The exterior hard shell of the underground nest is absent, but otherwise, the construction is identical to that of the ground mound, with the interior containing softer and more delicate chambers. Additionally, they dig up the roots that trees rely on for support. Many species of the genus Cryptotermes, including Neotermes insularis, Porotermes Adamson, and others, reside in tiny colonies throughout the branches and trunks of trees, frequently favoring the weaker growth rings.

c) Arboreal nest:

– Termite species such as Nasutitermes gravels and Nasutitermes walkeri construct arboreal nests, which may be large and at heights sometimes exceeding 20 m. They have ground contact, usually through the tree’s root crown on which the nest occurs.
